MEMPHIS SOUL

In Performance at the White House

MEMPHIS  SOUL

President and Mrs. Obama host a celebration of the timeless classics of "Memphis Soul" in this PBS music special taped in the East Room of the White House. The all-star concert honors the memorable soul sounds from the mid- to late-1960s that came from Memphis, Tennessee, and legendary labels like Stax-Volt Records, which featured artists such as Al Green, Mavis Staples, Carla Thomas, Otis Redding and many more.

Every form of rock today, including heavy metal, need to recognize that the birth of their musical style all has it roots right here, in black music from the South. Every legendary rock group from England and elsewhere; The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Cream (Eric Clapton), The Rolling Stones, etc., all know this and have payed their homage to these great American pioneers who were being ignore in the U.S.,but Elvis of course being from Memphis was in tune with it as well, with his Gospel music. Steve Perry of Journey says that Otis Redding and Sam Cooke were his influences. It seems to me that kids in the U.S. who like Rock think of black music as only being rap, and that is incorrect.
